The owner of every motor vehicle, trailer, or semi-trailer who intends to operate that vehicle upon any highway in Nova Scotia must obtain a Motor Vehicle Permit from the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The permit must be carried by the driver while operating the vehicle.

Also, effective January 1, 2004, any time a vehicle registration (plate) is issued or renewed for a motorized vehicle (excludes off-highway vehicles, trailers, semi-trailers and miscellaneous towed vehicles), insurance information is required. Alphanumeric plates are renewed for two years and cannot be renewed more than two months before their expiry date.

Trailer Fee Schedule (January 1 to December 31)

The permit fees for trucks, campers, buses and trailers are based on the combined weight of the vehicle and the maximum load which is to be carried.

To determine the fee payable, add the weight of the maximum load to be carried to the weight of the vehicle and refer to the appropriate table.

Application for registration of GVW in excess of 14,000 kg must be accompanied by completed form MV62G to show distance between axles, tire sizes and manufacturer's certificate of steering axle rating if steering axle weight to be in excess of 5,500 kg.

• Registration fees for Heavy Commercial Trailers may be paid in two installments. The first payment, for 60% of the annual fee, can be paid until July 15. The second payment, 40% of the annual fee is due before July 16.
• For number plates expiring on Dec. 31, Motor Vehicle Registrations for the new registration year go on sale on or after Nov. 1 of the current registration year.

Farm Truck and Commercial Fisher Truck Fee Schedule (One year)

Farm Truck Permit Endorsement
The truck, with or without farm implement, farm trailer or farm wagon attached, can be operated on a highway to transport the owner's farm products and farm supplies only. The use of tax-free gasoline in this truck is prohibited.

Commercial Fisherman Truck Permit Endorsement
The truck can be operated on+ a highway to transport the owner's harvest from the sea, related equipment and supplies only.
